EAT SIMPLE – LIVE MUJI
Stefan Lim & Tan / 12 October 2017
Dining in MUJI’s 70-seater mod eatery at Plaza Singapura is a lifestyle move. With its streamlined and minimalistic setting, the affair is laid-back, placid and modest. Food is served in wooden bowls or on glass plates that are also sold in store. It is, over a meal, like shopping at the same time. If you fancy, you can buy the same ingredients, serving bowls, cutlery and furniture to re-create the exact experience at home. Read our first-hand account of the MUJI meal that feels so simple, natural and Japanese.
Pork Katsu Donburi ($15.90)
Breaded pork cutlets are deep fried to golden brown, before they are cut to thick slices and drizzled with mayonnaise and Tonkatsu sauce. Add a serve of chewy 16-grain rice and wobbly onsen egg by the side to complete the bowl. What’s not to like?
For best taste: break egg and have overflowing yolk drench the firm grains and crispy pork slices before scooping them all up with spoon.
Cheese Baked Butter
Curry Chicken Rice ($17.90)
The conventional baked rice takes an Asian twist. 16-grain rice, chicken chunks, carrot and zucchini are drenched in butter curry, and served beneath melted, baked mozzarella cheese. Sizzling, indeed. Top this off with Triple Citrus Rosemary Soda ($7.90) to cool the spice.
Selection of 4 Deli featuring
Yellowtail Buri Fish Stew ($16.90)
The Selection of 4 Deli is a set of sides (2 hot and 2 cold) that you pick from an assortment of 30 different seasonal meats and greens. It’s the kind of food you eat in Japan and also like the Singaporean ‘economic rice’: a little bit of this, a little bit of that, and it’s a joy to eat.
Our pick: Yellowtail Buri Fish Stew, Sakura Chicken with Curry Miso, Pasta Orecchietta Smoked Chicken and Roasted Pumpkin & Capsicum Salad.
